In many cultures around the world post menopausal woman are viewed as wise women, woman who are respected in their communities and heralded for their contribution, experience and skills.
The subject of menopause is undergoing some transformation in the West which is greatly needed because for many years it has been seen as a disorder or malfunction in the female body. I want to offer some reassurance that the menopause is not a disease that needs curing – it is a natural process in the same way puberty or pregnancy are natural processes. It can also be a profound life transition offering wisdom, creativity, power and transformation if we have the right tools and support to help us.
Women in other parts of the world do not experience the range of symptoms we endure in the West, so suffering is not a universal female experience of the menopause. In my mind the disease lies not in the female body but with the society that we are pushing ourselves to fit into.
Isn’t it time we listened to our bodies and pushed back?
There is only one person who has ultimate ownership of your body and that’s you!
The human body contains within it immense wisdom and power. It will tell us when we are out of balance by throwing up symptoms which can be used as our call to action. We can choose to really honour ourselves through deep listening and by taking positive steps towards optimum health and well-being. This process can require courage, time, commitment and patience but the results are so worth it – our best years yet await us!
It is such an honour and privilege to connect with women in this way and witness the powerful transformation that takes place as a result.
